The foundation’s initial project began in Cali’s Bellavista neighborhood, drawing participants from ages 7-18 from area schools. Until 2011 the foundation operated from rented premises where 15 instructors (today 25), each specialized in a particular musical instrument, gave daily lessons.

In August 2011 Notes for Peace proudly opened its own learning center, a hub for musical instruction and social integration, where orchestra members and young apprentices can study, socialize and rehearse together, particularly during weekends.

In 2013 and 2015, two string orchestra projects were opened in other neighborhoods, seeking to impact a wider range of population.

In 2014, the age range was expanded to start at 2 years old with the Early Childhood Musical Program
Children meet daily at the headquarters for specialized music instruction, individual practice, to attend group therapy sessions or music theory lessons, also receiving a nutritional supplement.

The children from the other two neighborhoods meet twice a week to attend instrument and solfeo lessons, and orchestra rehearsals.

On-going monitoring of academic results is carried out for each child in order to ascertain the overall effect the program exerts on their school performance, with the aim of encouraging and obtaining improved scholastic levels.

The foundation provides daily tutoring to help out with homework, together with supervised computer access for school related research.

There is also a quarterly assessment, with metrics specifically designed for Notes for Peace, on the social and psychological impact of the program in each participant’s musical development and their academic performance at school.

Once the participants complete high school, they may apply for a scholarship to continue their musical education.

Currently there are eleven students with full scholarships, at the Conservatory Antonio María Valencia of Cali’s Institute of Fine Arts and one studying to become a professional Luthier in Tucumán, Argentina.

It is expected that over time, more students will decide to apply for these scholarships, provided through the generous support of corporate and individual “Godparent” sponsors.
